We never actually plan on going three weeks without a “Status Update,” but when we’re busy, sometimes it just goes that way. We’d like to say a special “thanks!” to all of the new customers we’ve been privileged to meet and serve since mid-January, as well as the customers who’ve called us back to their homes and businesses for additional work; they’ve made this the busiest three-week stretch in the history of RUSSIAN HILL HANDYMAN Co., and we’re grateful to have been able to serve them.

Local photographer, David Yu, captured this amazing shot of Coit Tower from the Marin Headlands during the 49ers run-up to the NFC Championship. I’m not sure how afoul I’m running of the Creative Commons License, since this may be considered a commercial use, but — for the purposes of sharing David’s photography and crediting him properly — I’m going to characterize this as more of a personal blog update than a company status update.

Having said that, however, it bears mentioning that if you’ve come here for some reason other than to appreciate and share my taste in local photography, that the week of January 21 is completely booked with customer appointments already, and that we’re scheduling new customer appointments for the week of the 28th — a few appointments remain available next week, and the following week — beginning February 4th — still has a few appointments available as well. Let us know what you need done, and we’ll let you know how soon we can get to it.

While we’re through-and-through Giants fans, which means that I got to celebrate a Super Bowl win last February, followed by a World Series celebration in October, we would be fools not to jump on the bandwagon at this point and cheer for the 49ers — if for no other reason than drunken 49ers fans celebrating a Super Bowl win is bound to yield no fewer than a dozen calls on Monday, February 4th, requesting repair assistance with doors kicked off hinges in the Marina and holes punched in walls on Polk Street. We’ve been at this for a few years, and we can bank on the intoxicated manliness of our neighbors turning into small-yet-urgent fix-it opportunities you can set your watch by. — so GO NINERS!

I hope everyone enjoys a football-free weekend before we all start losing our minds on February 3rd.

Someone recently shared a link on Facebook with me about the 12 things you wish you knew before moving to San Francisco, and among them was the fact that Divisadero represents the “Fog-Line” for The City — true that, and it’s also roughly the line past which we are generally uncomfortable transiting for work, but, like the fog, we will always make exceptions.

This was a reminder of how change is happening every second of every minute of every day around us, and how it’s nearly impossible to detect the change until it’s far behind us and manifesting itself in ways we didn’t notice at the time. — at least, it was for me. I’m generally not one given toward great existential analysis on these pages, but I started typing a blog update, and that’s what came out of me — all, really, because I simply had to share that photo with you.

There aren’t many jobs that afford you views like this one in the middle of the work day — and while no one on the staff took this photo, there were a number of times where one of us was passing from Pacific Heights to the Marina through the Presidio, and we grabbed a cup of coffee near West Beach and caught Larry Ellison’s guys on the water, getting set for last fall’s America’s Cup World Series races.

In addition to being pretty skilled at hanging televisions, repairing drywall and upgrading light fixtures, a few of us are pretty good sailors (at least we used to be), but racing isn’t really our strongest suit. That said, we’re all looking forward to the AC72 finals this summer while loathing the inevitable traffic, glitter and general mayhem that’s sure to accompany it. For the moment, we’re just relishing a decent Sierra snowpack and the fall-off in our temporary tourist population that comes with January’s wet weather.

This update — concluding the work week of December 31st — lets you know that we’re completely booked for the upcoming week of January 7th, but that we are taking new customer requests for the following week of the 14th, during which there are a “smattering” of available appointments from which to choose.
